How to track countries you have visited

The simplest way to keep a record of every country, city and region you have visited, and turn it into a living world map you can share.

Aug 2026

Why track your travels at all?

Most people underestimate how much they have travelled, and forget where they have been surprisingly fast. A country you passed through five years ago, a city weekend with friends, a layover that became a day of exploring. Writing it down turns vague memories into a record you can actually look at, share and build on.

A good travel record also answers questions you will keep getting: how many countries have you visited? Which continents? Have you been to Japan? Having one place with the answer saves you from recounting your life story every time.

The three levels of detail

Countries are the classic unit. Most travellers count using the 195 UN member and observer states, and it is the level everyone understands.

Regions add real depth. Visiting France once is not the same as having been to Provence, Brittany and Alsace. Regions capture that difference.

Cities are where memories actually live. Stamping the cities you have explored makes your map personal rather than just political.

How to do it with AvioStory

Create a free account, then open the map and tap each country you have visited. Each tap adds a stamp. You can also log how many times you have visited, mark favourites, and add cities and regions inside each country.

Everything syncs to your account, so your passport follows you across devices. As you stamp more of the world you earn XP, level up and unlock achievements for milestones like visiting your first continent or reaching ten countries.

Tips for an honest record

Decide on your own rules early. A common approach: airport layovers do not count, but leaving the airport does. Driving through counts if you stopped. Whatever you choose, stay consistent so your numbers mean something over time.
